Australian Cattle Council : Yearbook 2010
56 YEARBOOK 2010 CATTLE COUNCIL OF AUSTRALIA WAFarmers continues to be instrumental in discussions to further the Regional Saleyard Strategy in an effort to have an industry ownership model. With the Muchea Saleyard opening within the near future, the State Saleyard Strategy is undertaking further development by the Department of Agriculture and Food WA (DAFWA) together with other Government agencies, with WAFarmers having significant input. WAFarmers co-operative model, being an alternative or adjunct model, is under consideration from DAFWA. Although fees are going to rise regardless, the co-operative model is likely to be of the least cost to the producer as well as providing perpetual ownership to our industry. In October 2009, the WA Beef Industry Stocktake Committee, which WAFarmers played a pivotal role in the formation of, released an executive summary report and issues paper. These documents were designed to provide the blueprint for change in the beef industry to one which is a more sustainable, market-driven industry. WAFarmers provided a written submission on this, outlining some concerns, but largely supported the report's recommendations. In February 2010, the Beef Industry Investment Council was initiated, following the State Governments delivery of some key recommendations from the Beef Stocktake Report. Tony Hiscock was appointed as Chairman of the Beef Industry Investment Council, which is designed to re-invigorate the beef industry in Western Australia. WAFarmers was disappointed that $500,000 of the Cattle Industry Compensation Fund (CICF) was used to fund the investment council's running costs for two years. The CICF was put in place and funded by industry to protect the industry against emergency disease outbreaks. However, WAFarmers is supportive of the Stocktake process, and looks forward to being an integral part of helping to rejuvenate the State's beef cattle industry.
