Australian Cattle Council : Yearbook 2008
page 10 C aTTL e COUNCIL OF a USTR a LI a Y ea RBOOK 2008 • land and water prices across Australia continue to escalate; and • Australia Meat Holdings changing ownership, with JBS Friboi acquiring Swift holdings. all these issues have impacted or will potentially impact upon beef producers’ bottom line; Cattle Council continues to adopt a proactive approach towards ensuring that the industry remains profitable. Regarding the climate-change debate, Cattle Council has formed a taskforce that is sourcing outside expertise and working closely with Meat & Livestock australia and the National Farmers’ Federation to develop policy that will see our production sector having its voice heard at all levels in the national debate. Beef producers are looking for the answers to the all important climate change questions: 1. How do we measure our emissions from beef production? 2. What will be the consequences when we have eTS? 3. What happens to our export markets if major competitors such as Brazil don’t have an eTS? 4. How much will our costs increase or decrease? 5. How can we start to understand what practices we may have to change when we are producing beef under an eTS? as information becomes available Cattle Council will be working to help the industry respond. Now is the time for all producers to continue their support for groups such as Cattle Council and the NFF by being active through their State farmer groups. We are all working on your behalf to represent, promote and develop sound policy for the beef industry. All these issues have impacted or will potentially impact upon beef producers’ bottom line; Cattle Council continues to adopt a proactive approach towards ensuring that the industry remains profitable.
