page 26 C aTTL e COUNCIL OF a USTR a LI a Y ea RBOOK 2008 Livestock production assurance The natural progression in life is that when you grow up, you leave the nest and fend for yourself. This year, the Livestock production assurance (Lpa) system has grown up and is moving out of home, with management of the standards moving from Meat and Livestock australia (MLa) to aUS-MeaT 1 . a part of this moving process included ensuring that all producers using Lpa Food Safety National vendor Declarations were fully accredited, which occurred on the 1st of March 2008. On that day, the industry had 135,200 properties fully accredited in the Lpa program. a recent survey has found that more than 95% of all cattle presented for sale are fully accredited under the Lpa food safety program: Lpa has well and truly grown up. Cattle Council of australia is proud of the fact that the Lpa food safety program has been accepted by the australian cattle industry. We can now guarantee to our domestic and overseas markets that we have a system in place that assures the integrity of our product. all beef producers should be equally proud of the fact that australian beef, their beef, is equal to or better than the safest in the world, and if our overseas markets want proof, we have the auditable system to do so. However, for all that we do have to be proud of, it is not time to rest on our laurels. The export beef market is extremely competitive, and we must continue to differentiate our product so that we remain a preferred supplier in the premium markets of the world. We must continue to improve and work towards best practice. The Cattle Council of australia is continually encouraging all australian beef producers to be sure that they meet industry best practice in all facets of their business. By ensuring that techniques, methods, processes, and activities undertaken on-farm are more effective at delivering the best beef in the world, we will continue to remain competitive on the world stage. With the proper processes and audits, improved productivity can be delivered with fewer problems and unforeseen complications. Best practices can also be defined as the most efficient (least amount of effort) and effective (best results) way of accomplishing a task, based on repeatable procedures that have proven themselves over time for large numbers of people. Now that we have an industry-wide assurance program for food safety, it is time to encourage producers to move towards demonstrating that they are best practice in every facet of their business. On-farm Quality assurance is not just a cost to a business to meet a certain market, it is a tool that improves productivity and efficiency. It is also a great tool for demonstrating the pride that you take in your business by proving to the world that australian beef producers are the best in the world. Through Lpa Qa and Cattlecare, the Cattle Council of australia is committed to promoting and developing on- farm Qa programs that meet the needs of the producers that use them, and are recognised around the world as demonstrating world’s best practice. 1 The marketing and promotion of Lpa Food Safety and Lpa Quality assurance will remain under the management of Meat & Livestock australia.
